3 x Hehku

3 x Hehku

  • The communal Hehku Carnival has been celebrated – with only a few exceptions – since 2017. This popular low-threshold city event once again brings light and joy into the October darkness on the very last day of the month. Hehku has many sides, but here are three reasons why this event is so brilliant!

Ihmisiä pimeähkössä Rauhanpuistosssa.

1. Community

The Hehku Carnival wouldn’t exist without the active Uusikaupunki community — not only has it embraced the event as its own, but it also takes an enthusiastic part in organizing it. Local spirit is Hehku’s strength, both in the park and on stage!

This year’s stage program features the radiant Madame Pumpkin and her band, the stars of the musical Mannapuuroa ja mansikkaa (“Semolina Porridge and Strawberries”), as well as Flowing Linda, arriving from afar with a stunning light show that will also illuminate the park.

And as always, the park will be full of delights! There’s the Hehku buffet, atmospheric craft stalls, treats from abroad, honey from the neighboring parish — and much more! For the little ones, a gently spooky light trail and some adorable Rähmä-Käpälä animals to pet. The library will also keep its doors open until 7 p.m., offering a fun ghost hunt and short films suitable for all ages.

2. The Citywide Costume Party

The costume contest has been at the heart of the Hehku Carnival since the very beginning — and so it remains! Everyone is welcome to join this citywide masquerade, regardless of age, gender, or marital status. On Hehku night, even adults are encouraged to let loose and dress up — the fancier (or spookier), the better!

Of course, the best costumes will be rewarded! A distinguished jury will judge the participants and award prizes in three categories: the most radiant, the cutest, and the most surprising. In addition, the jury may choose one extra winner outside the main categories — so you might win even if your costume doesn’t quite fit any of them!

To take part, dress up, come to Rauhanpuisto Park on Friday, October 31, and register at the info point between 5:00–5:30 p.m. The best costumes will be announced at 6:30 p.m.

3. The Most Glowing of All

Since 2017, Hehku has also honored a “Most Glowing of the Year”, chosen by public vote — someone who spreads positivity and good energy and helps make Uusikaupunki a better place to live. This year, for the first time ever, the title can also be awarded to a local action or phenomenon, not just an individual.

More than 200 nominations were submitted! Clearly, there’s plenty of Hehku shining in Uusikaupunki and its people. The five nominees who received the most votes have made it to the final round. The winner will be crowned as the Most Glowing of 2025 at 6 p.m. on the event evening.

Who do you think deserves the title this year? Vote by October 28, only in Finnish, who votes will be entered into a draw to win a €100 gift card for shopping and services at local brick-and-mortar businesses. Äänestä vuoden Hehkuvinta 2025! | Uudenkaupungin kaupunki
