Summer Job in Uusikaupunki: Museum assistant

“I worked at Uki Outlet for a few summers. This year the shop wasn’t opened for the summer season, so I had to look for a new summer job. A friend of mine had good experiences working at the Uusikaupunki Museum, so I decided to submit my application here.

I work at three museums in the town centre: the Wahlberg Museum House, the Sailor’s Home Museum and the Pilot Museum. My duties mainly consist of customer service, opening and closing the museums, arranging exhibitions and keeping the premises tidy. At the Wahlberg Museum House, I also occasionally get to give guided tours to visitors.

The workdays are pleasantly varied. The smaller museums are only open for a few hours a day, so I often get to work at several locations during the same day. Museum visitors are interested and cheerful, and it’s enjoyable to talk with them. I always do my best to answer any questions they may have.

The first few weeks of the summer were spent in training. We familiarised ourselves with the museums, attended guided tours and practised guiding visitors ourselves. I was a little nervous beforehand about how I would manage to absorb such a huge amount of information, but in the end it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I had expected. There are plenty of dates and historical details to remember, but I’ve managed to retain them quite well.

So far, I have given one guided tour myself, and I really enjoyed it. I’m already looking forward to doing more.

The atmosphere at the museum is great, and I genuinely enjoy working here. Even though I wasn’t particularly interested in history before, this job has sparked my interest because I’ve learned so much about local history.

I especially like the Sailor’s Home Museum. It feels cosy and peaceful, and of course it has a fascinating history. Maybe one day I’ll have a place like this as my own summer cottage.”
