Uusikaupunki is Jussi Rainio’s paradise

  • Musician Jussi Rainio spent his childhood in unstable conditions in the Helsinki metropolitan area. When he moved to his mother’s place in Uusikaupunki at the age of ten, life started to show its colors.
  • -Uusikaupunki is still paradise to me.

A local boy.

That’s how Jussi Rainio feels in Uusikaupunki, and that’s something he especially values in his hometown.

-Here, I can just be Jussi Rainio. No one treats me like a big star; I can move around freely anywhere. Even though I do public work, I don’t enjoy much attention and prefer to stay a bit on the sidelines. In Uusikaupunki, I can simply be Jussi,” he says.

Jussi fell in love with the maritime nature of the city as a child. Moving to Uusikaupunki meant not only a safer everyday life but also long, lazy summer days embraced by the beautiful archipelago.

-It was the dream of my childhood come true. It still feels important to live by the sea.”

Jussi has never longed for bigger circles than his hometown. In the tranquil atmosphere of this coastal city, thoughts can unwind after gig weekends, and the people are friendly.

-Here, people are considerate and kind to each other,” Jussi says.

Uusikaupunki is often said to be “at the bottom of a sack,” far from passing traffic. According to Jussi, that is an excellent reason to come and discover this hidden gem of the southwestern archipelago.

Stunning Archipelago

The picturesque archipelago is a boater’s dream. There are plenty of islands to explore, and the shimmering sea extends as far as the eye can see. You can stop for a meal at the charming archipelago restaurant Odine.

Wooden House Area

The idyllic and well-preserved wooden house area in the city center exudes stories of the town’s long history. In summer, some of the wooden house residents invite visitors into their fascinating gardens. The splendid Wahlberg Museum House is also part of the wooden house area.

Restaurants

Uusikaupunki has a unique restaurant scene with many excellent dining options. There are several good restaurants in the seaside warehouses of Kaupunginlahti and delicious dishes in the renovated Santtioranta. The donuts at the Pakkahuone guest harbor are a must-try, whether you arrive by land or sea.
