Find your Christmas spirit in Uusikaupunki

  • There is a sprinkle of Christmas magic in the wooden house town – the charming events create a warm and cosy festive atmosphere just like the old times, the service-oriented shops help out the elf, and local delicacies add a finishing touch to the Christmas dinner table. Get into the festive mood in Uusikaupunki!

Enjoy the atmosphere

In Uusikaupunki, settling into the Christmas spirit traditionally begins on the last Sunday of November, when the Christmas season in the town of wooden houses is officially opened and the city’s award-winning Christmas lights are lit.

Browse around the craftmakers’ stalls at the Olde Tyme market, sit down for a warming mug of mulled wine in the Christmas land in Rauhanpuisto, dive into the atmosphere of Christmases past in the Christmas exhibition at the museum and go say ‘hi’ to the one and only Santa Claus! The children’s very own Christmas party will take place in the market square a few days earlier on Thursday, 24 November.

Music enthusiasts are in for a treat throughout the festive season in the town of wooden houses – you can sit down in one of the area’s splendid churches to sing the most beautiful Christmas carols, enjoy the Puutalotaupungin joulukonsertti (wooden house town Christmas concert) featuring Lauri Ketonen on the last Sunday of November, or perhaps attend the joint concert of local choirs.

If you find it hard to get into the Christmas spirit, go and take a peek at the stunning Christmas calendar windows of the old wooden houses, take your whole family to the Joulua kaikille (Christmas for all) event or attend the Kittilän Tallin Joulu (Kittilä Stables Christmas) event on Independence Day to rediscover the magic of Christmas.

Treat yourself to delicacies

Invite a friend for a Christmas lunch in one of the town’s excellent restaurants or take a group of friends with you and go around sampling the delicious Kuumotus beverages in cafés and restaurants in the spirit of the season.

At the Olde Tyme market, you will find delicious food gifts for the near and dear, and at the REKO distributions on Thursday evenings you can buy locally produced delicacies for the Christmas dinner table.

Also at Christmas, it is worth favouring the exquisite offering of the local producers: fresh fish caught nearby, meringues with just the right amount of chewiness whipped up in Ruokola and bread baked with grain from a nearby village.

Something to slip into Santa’s sack

The elf’s attentive helpers in the lovely brick-and-mortar shops in the wooden house town are ready to wrap some Christmas surprises to be hidden in Santa’s sack. In addition to the Olde Tyme market, you can also get into the yuletide market atmosphere at the Männäinen Christmas market on 18 December.

Local shops will be extending their opening hours at Christmas so that as many people as possible have time to shop for gifts in their hometown – follow the shops’ communications and make use of the excellent services of Uusikaupunki, even during the most wonderful time of the year!

As is the tradition, local Christmas Peace will be declared on the steps of the the New Church on 24 December at 12 noon.
