Professional entertainer enjoys Uusikaupunki
- Lauri Ketonen is familiar to many as an actor, singer and director.
Lauri became interested in theatre in his youth at the Uusikaupunki Theatre and, after completing upper secondary school, he enrolled at Theatre Academy Helsinki. Lauri has been involved with theatre for more than 30 years and entertained people at sea for over 10 years. Lauri has visited Uusikaupunki for various musical events and concerts, and has directed amateur actors of both Uusikaupunki Theatre and Pyhämaa.

“The restaurants of Uusikaupunki serve excellent food with lots of variety. Gasthaus Pooki is especially close to my heart as I worked there in the summer when I was young. It is a legendary stone building with a lush inner courtyard, an archipelago buffet, a woodshed for dancing and beer and wine houses that make up a charming restaurant environment. The warehouse restaurants and terraces of Kaupunginlahti are beautiful places where people can enjoy both winter and summer. There is a wide variety of high-quality alternatives and completely new concepts,” says Lauri with delight.
The freshwater pool and its surroundings form a beautiful area. People can gaze at the islands and beaches of summer cottages on a boat ride through the lock gates. You can marvel at the shoreline of the lake, which was dammed in the 1960s and the sea on the other side of the road if you want to drive around. Cyclists can enjoy their meals in a barbecue shelter. My favourite swimming beach is the rocky Karhuluoto beach.

The Isokari lighthouse island is breathtakingly beautiful and very dear to me. My grandfather was a lighthouse keeper on the island and our family has a summer residence there. From Uusikaupunki, you can get a taste of the outer archipelago even during a day trip. Guided tours offer insight into the lighthouse and the history, vegetation and birds of the island. The most important scenery to me is ‘beyond the land’, in the middle of a rugged rocky landscape, admiring the ever-changing sea. When it is dark, I recommend staring at the starlit sky while the light from the lighthouse scans the landscape.”
