Wintery Uusikaupunki is full of things to do

  • In the slowly lengthening afternoon light, there's already a hint of spring, but in February, you can still fully enjoy the beautiful winter. Whether you prefer outdoor activities or staying indoors, there are plenty of things to do!

When to ice skate, just because…

…of course, in the winter! Uusikaupunki has over a dozen outdoor ice rinks maintained by the city and numerous cross-country ski trails, with real-time updates available on the city’s website.

If the weather doesn’t favor winter sports, you can always choose indoor options for both ice skating and skiing: at the fitness track, you can ski with a card between 6-22 daily, and the ice hall offers public skating on Sundays from 10-11.

Fatigue is water-soluble

Winter swimming is known to have several health benefits – cold water induces pleasure, improves sleep quality, and boosts immunity. You can indulge in this beneficial activity in Uusikaupunki at places like Santtio, Haimio, and Kaukjärvi.

If you prefer swimming in warmer conditions, you should head to the swimming hall. There, you can swim or water jog at your own pace or participate in one of the many water aerobics classes.

Let’s take a look now…

…at movies! Or theater, concerts, sports!

Did you know that the charming Kuvala cinema is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year! This small and charming movie theater keeps up with the digital age and showcases the latest movies in historical settings that perfectly complement the city’s atmosphere.

Of course, the city also boasts a magnificent theater where you can catch Molière’s comedy “The Hypochondriac” until the end of March. In the same hall, there are also high-quality concerts in February, such as Tuula Amberla on February 2nd and Jarkko Ahola on February 9th.

And, of course, we must not forget the Korihait’s battle for a playoff spot: the last regular-season home game will be played at Uusikaupunki Arena on the first Saturday of February.

February is full of historical gems

In addition to Kuvala, Uusikaupunki’s railway is also celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. At the lecture organized by Vakkaopisto on February 13th, you can delve into the history, present, and future of the railway.

You can also explore local history gems while enjoying the outdoors: the mobile-guided tours released by the Uusikaupunki museum offer new perspectives on the city’s history during walks. With the help of guides, you can explore the history of places like Crusell, Kaupunginlahti, Uusikaupunki peace, or local houses at your own pace using a smart device. Convenient and enjoyable!

Handy activities at your fingertips

Before it’s time to start germinating seeds for summer, there are plenty of enjoyable activities for your hands. Is it finally the right time to renovate that long-awaited porch window or attic door? At Vakkaopisto’s renovation course starting on February 25th, you can explore traditional methods through hands-on work.

For young people, there’s the Ukicon cosplay event during the winter break, which will be held on February 24th at Crusell. The program includes karaoke, an art alley, open stage, a game room, a photo booth, a stuffed animal competition, a catwalk for costume presentations, and a separate costume competition. The focus of the event is undoubtedly the stunning costumes, so it’s worth investing time and effort into designing and creating your outfits!
